I converted mine to R-134a last year. It works just as well as it did with the R-12, but the R-134a requires more head pressure (high side) to cool as efficiently as the R-12 did. The only noticable change is that the radiator fan runs on the second speed more often because the high pressure switch will trip the second stage relay more often.

The simplest way I found is to physically feel all of the hose end connections to see if you can feel any oil on them. I took my Jetta to a shop, they used an electronic freon detector to find the leaking evaporator.

My advice would be to find a competent A/C shop to check things out for you, one that will explain and show you what's going on with the system.
