Timing was 8-10btdc (when possible) and 32-34 total advance (stock distributor) ---------------------- Clip ------------------------ Hope this is a typo! Max advance should be about 43 degrees on a Type IV Air Cooled. Everything else sounds exactly what I see on a 2000 mile trip from the flatlands into the mountains. I've never seen the 475 on my cylinder heads, about the most is 400 fighting 30 mph head winds and cross winds. If you got point set distributor dwell could cause the higher reading and if you only getting 34 degrees advance that could cause it too. (other than the thermostat). I was hoping to see an external oil cooler mentioned. Got one? Without the oil cooler I often saw 260 / 270 oil temp but only for 600 miles because I added one at that point on my new engine.
