There are TWO types of iron oxide. Ferrous Oxide and Ferric Oxide (different chemical make up FeO2 and Fe2O3. I never remember which is which, but rust is one type (and is the type that spreads.) The other type is stable (you can covert one type into the other.) The stable stuff is black, the aggressive stuff is red.
