I use a bolt through one of the case tranny mounting holes with a flat bar bent around to support my dial gauge. I mount the flywheel and place the dial gauge on the part that the disk runs on. I take a big rubber hammer and whack the flywheel in the center to move it all the way back. Then I take a pry bar and pry the flywheel back out. Remember the clearances are about .007 to .015 so you won't notice movement. The gauge will see it but you won't. On engines out of the van I use a flat bar across two diagonal engine bolt mountings with spacers off the case and I have a jig bolted to the flat bar to hold my dial gauge. Either way will work good. Clean the washers and use light oil. If you use heavy grease it will not compress and you'll be measuring wrong. Use heavy grease to hold the washers in position when you are ready to go back with the flywheel.
