Hi group...Yes I am here and lurking as usual The 3/4 slider is most likely the culprit to the sudden grinding on downshift, but could just as easily be a bad syncro...The extra power from a conversion tends to hasten an existing problem, not to mention the driver trying to see just how much power is available...nahhh, we wouldn't do that would we... The only tranny's with the factory late slider were the very last off the production line in late 89 and 90 on. I have seen 3 of the factory hubs break through the years which is why I use the "good stuff" which I buy from Weddle as they are different material and nice Albin Gear stuff. On any tranny I do for a conversion, I use the early ring/pinion and the later other guts with the updated 3/4 slider hub to try to get them to last. The late ring/pinion with 6 pinion teeth is weaker then it should be. Bottom line is fix it sooner rather than later for my sake (or whoever does it) so the housings and other stuff are reusable. Letting stuff go till the very last just costs us all. Daryl of AA Transaxle Duvall, WA. (Seattle area) (425) 788-4070 1-877-377-0773 (toll free) aatransaxle.com (web site)

I've recently developed a grinding noise in my tranny when downshifting between 4th and 3rd gear. Is this the dreaded cracked gearhub? Is there anything I can do to delay getting the tranny rebuilt? This, of course, has to happen two weeks after the new I$ conversion was installed.......Arrrggghhh........

Thanks, Doug Subject: Daryl the tranny man we need you

Doug, The gearhub problem is more common in the earlier trannys and less common in the later ones. Also the tranny is designed to handle the power of the wateboxer engine with little low end torque. The problem may have been made worse by the conversion??? Be this as it may I would suggest you contacting our resident tranny expert on the list. Daryl and daryl and the other daryl. He is located somewhere in the great northwest but ships out from time to time. His rebuilds are some of the best has his heart is in his work. gary Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 10:27:14 -0500 From: Doug Alcock <doug.alcock@HEWITT.COM> Subject: 3/4 gear trouble?
