I've had good results with U-Haul's trailers, the tandem-axle ones that get the van fully off the ground. (Not the tow dollies, I haven't tried those.) They're very stable, and U-Haul doesn't charge you milage on trailers, just a flat daily rate. They're kind of heavy, though, about 1400 pounds plus the weight of your vehicle. I've had the best results loading heavy end forward, which means backwards for a Vanagon.
