I am assuming that you are talking about the front main seal hiding behind the flywheel. I use a sheet metal screw and thread it into the seal surface that you see, then use leverage of various types to pull the seal out, it might require two or three attempts to pull the seal. By leverage I mean pliers or other tool to grip the sheet metal screw head to pull on. Often a simple long blade screwdriver rested on the crank end will start it moving and you will not need the screw. Stick your end play shims together and to the crank end with heavy grease so they stay put when you whack that seal in. (the stack order is not important) The seal should seat at about 1/16" below the aluminum case surrounding it. Clean any oil residue and try to seat the new seal in a dry case. A little gasket sealer around the perimeter can act as a lubricant and make it set into the case easier but sealer is not required. Try to use multiple locations as pressure points and try to keep the seal going in relatively flat and not hard binding at an angle. The flywheel O ring goes inside the flywheel in the area that seats around the crank shaft end. You'll need something like an ice pick to pull the old one out. The new seals are covered with graphite and most often do not require any lube.
