This can be due to an increasingly common failure of the electronics
within the temp gauge itself. I have found this to be the case on
numerous 85 and newer temp gauges on tachometer equipped models. The
temp gauge on large clock models is different and so far I have not seen
the same internal gauge fault cause blinking on any of these.

The way to check for this is to remove the relay "43" and see if the
problem goes away. If it does NOT, suspect the gauge.
I have replaced temp gauges to fix this on one or more 85,86,87, and 88
tach equipped Vanagons.

There are other possible causes of this symptom.
A few weeks ago I fixed it on a 82 diesel and the final cause turned out
to be the alternator!
