Stan, the diesel IS an I4 engine and water-cooled. All Vanagon manual trannys must be tipped down at the nose end before the tranny can be moved forward away from the engine. Your suggestion to loosen and even lower the rear engine crossbar with longer bolts is a good idea even with the water-cooled models. Otherwise the muffler and/or tail pipe can hit the rear body skirt as the tranny is lowered.
