Hmmm....

I've replaced the clutch master cylinder a couple of times - though it's
been a while - and I don't remember the bolts holding it in place as going
through the master cylinder chamber.  If they do, I agree, it's a poor
design.  I'd say buy a new master cylinder from one of the online vendors.
Also, if my experience and the experience reported by other list members is
any guide, buy a slave cylinder too as the two cylinders tend to go out
more-or-less at the same time.
