This may be a long shot...

But... could it be that your local scrap yard actually ends up with a few stolen cars every now and then??

That could be a good reason to prohibit photographing... and maybe even though the owners do not "condone" the parting out of stolen cars... it may well be that the reality is that they just "appear" on the lot, and get parted out, and then disappear into thin air.

Our local junk yard in East Rochester (for those few Rochestarians on the list) always had vicous attack dogs too behind the fence... we always wondered what was in there that was worth so much that they had to have a team of drooling dobermans patrolling the place at night.

Just an idea that seemed to make sense to me.
