Howzabout instead a VanaLava Lamp? Transparent coolant hoses and reservoirs as you suggest, but with the addition of psychodelic wax globules? Totally in keeping with the neo-hippie reputation of the VW vans, and will provide hours of hallucinogenic transfixation.
