Do you mean the gauge on the dashboard or the sensor on the bottle?

Volks,

It turned out to be caused by corrosion and build up on the
contacts of the coolant sensor gauge.  I bet cleaning the contacts would
have fixed the problem, but I decided to replace the gauge.  It hasn't
acted
up since.
