Subject: clutch chatter -- how serious?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

my '82 vanagon had a new clutch installed about 12k back but, later, some "chatter" began surfacing when the van is on an upgrade and starting-up from a dead stop. the chatter, which feels like internal bucking from the rear end, stops when the clutch pedal is disengaged. i am told the chatter is due to an ill-matched surface, like clutch and pressure plate or something. the question is, is this a fatal condition or one that just sounds bad? is such a clutch going to go bad sooner rather than later? otherwise, gears shift easily and clutch is normal. thanks for any thoughts. art
