Volks,
I had a similar problem, if not exact, when I bought my current Vanagon. It
was the weirdest and scariest thing. I'd be cruising along and all of
sudden the flashing light would engage and the needle would spike. There
did seem to be some correlation between load and behavior, but I never
completely understood why. It did scare the hell out of me, but I knew the
engine wasn't hot enough to overheat. It happened a few times right after I
started the engine up. I was in Durango, CO during the winter and it was
super cold outside. So, there was NO way the engine could have been
overheating.
This started right after I had purchased my latest Vanagon, which had sat in
storage for almost 20 years. The gauge had been sitting in the same coolant
all this time. It turned out to be caused by corrosion and build up on the
contacts of the coolant sensor gauge. I bet cleaning the contacts would
have fixed the problem, but I decided to replace the gauge. It hasn't acted
up since.
Hope This Helps,
Josh
