Some of the best fuel economy I've ever gotten has been driving on Maryland's Eastern Shore (where speeds are usually 50mph at the top). The flat terrain, the lower top speed got me 30mpg on my VR6 Automatic Corrado. The 500 miles I put on that tank of gas was great (the VR6 has an 18.5 gallon tank). The Vanagon's are more aerodynamic (and hence more stable) than the older buses, but they are still a brick in the wind.
