Hi Kevin, ATF has a wide expansion characteristic from cold to hot and the internal transmission cavitity needs to "breathe". I have a '90 DoKa and a '91 MV, both automatics and the transmissions work flawlessly! I change the ATF every 30K miles with a "shot" of Trans-X additive before and after the ATF change. The shift quality is much like today's complex computer controlled automatics and my DoKa gets ~20 mpg @ 70 mph! I've owned several manual trans Vanagons and after driving an automatic, I'll never own another stick-shift Vanagon! Note!!! My two automatics were carefully serviced and sensibly driven by the POs. However if a Vanagon automatic transmission has been neglected, overheated, has friction material/metal bits in the pan or evidence of a trailer hitch, a full reconditioning may be necessary before the flawless operation I boast about can be experienced. Regards, John
