Also to simply stop luggage tall enough to make contact with the rear window glass from shifting backwards thru said glass when you roar off the mark with neck-snapping acceleration... ;) Actually,my jail bars really did save the back window once when I had a lot of gear in the back,but if truth be known,it was really due to driving up a very steep track at the time...
