If the vibrationchanges with engine spped, the problem is the input
shaft-bearing assembly. If the whine varies with road speed, regardless
of gear, it is the ring-pinion or output bearings. If it whines bad, oil
will not make a difference. Something is wrong.

Subject: Gear whine causes
Now that I'm back to driving our '88 Westy regularly, I'm noticing the
gear
whine is much louder than I think it should be for a newly rebuilt
transmission. There is pronounced whine in 2nd gear, but also in the
other
gears, and a distinct vibration felt through the shifter at 90km/h,
enough
that the shifter occasionally buzzes at highway speeds.
This transmission was rebuilt a few years ago at AutoSpiel in Victoria,
twice actually - the first time only bearings were replaced, then a year
later, a *new* ring & pinion was installed after it got very noisy. I am
now
worried that something is still not right, and don't want to wear out my
$700 R&P.
Russell Sherman insists on using Pennzoil GL-4 dino oil in his rebuilds
(as
does the local VW dealer last time I checked), even though shifting is
*awful* when cold with this stuff. I switched to Amsoil Series 2000 oil
a few
months after the rebuild, since I had access to it, and specs indicated
it
should be equal to or better than Redline MT90. Here is the info on it:
http://www.amsoil.com/products/tgr.html
It is the only oil I know of that is rated for GL2 through GL5, and I
confirmed with Amsoil that it is suitable for a GL4 designed tranny like
mine.
This trans is a factory rebuilt with approx 210k km on the gears and
syncros, so is it possible the gears are worn and causing the noise?
This
could explain why 2nd gear seems the worst...?
What noises are others with rebuilt transmissions hearing?
