You don't need a router to get a firewall. XP has a firewall built in. Just be sure it is active for your internet connection. There are also several aftermarket firewalls. Norton's works well. I have less experience with McAfee's, but the reviews are OK. Many people like Blackice. I don't know Macs, but I am sure software firewalls are available there as well. The main thing is to be sure to have some antivirus and firewall software installed, and keep them updated. If it has been a couple of months since you did an update, you might as well just uninstall them.

Some other things to keep in mind: Don't share your root directory. Disable or rename accounts named administrator or guest. Change your password pretty often. Don't use your dog's name as a password. Pick a favorite quote and use the first letter of each word, but mix upper and lower case. "Who's on first, What's on second" becomes wOFwoS.
