Protecting you computers by having an antivirus like Norton doesn't limit the number of virus or malicious spam mail to be sent to you. When you surf the net, web masters with ill intentions can retrieve your e-mail address, see what sites you have previous visited and so on. When collected your e-mail address, it can be distributed to others that want to send you spam and such.

I'm using a program called Ad-watch http://www.lavasoft.nu/ that removes all suspicious cookies and spyware from my computer. It also removes the same while surfing the net. An antivirus program doesn't do this.
