A router won't protect you from email viruses.

The best way to keep from getting them is to not run Microsoft Outlook. This will protect you from the Outlook bugs that cause some attachments to automatically open. Then don't open any attachment you aren't sure about.

A good second line of defense is a decent antivirus program.
