You all really think that the German VW car designers cared (or even knew)
about the speed limit in the USA??

My gut feeling is, that since the MV 2.1 liter motors, as well as any other
motor you can get in a Vanagon in the USA, are EXACTLY the same as the
motors  here in Europe (where people drive pretty fast on the Autobahns)
that the designers probably  had something else in mind.

Perhaps they were thinking more about issues of safety and what could
possibly happen to such a tall bread-boxy vehicle when it tries to take a
curve, or avoid a deer,  at say.... 140 mph.

My Vanagon drives 90 mph with no problem on flat highways... while I do not
do this often, if the road is safe, and things are flowing, I will just put
the pedal to the floor and enjoy the ride.  140,000 miles so far with no
problems.

Hope it stays that way

The only minor drawback is that the Vanagon was conceived and groomed when
we had a 55 mph national  speed limit.

My theiry was that the entire engine/drivetrain was
engineered to give the best gas mileage at 55 to look good on the
EPA/DOT testing.
