The only exhaust stud nuts that I have ever seen that were totally satisfactory were brass nuts. Not cheap brass, but high quality brass. Fairly hard. The particular application was on the exhaust studs of aircraft engines. The brass is soft enough to turn even after being in place for lots of hours of use on a hot exhaust. Not supposed to use them twice. The alternative was a specially alloyed heat-treated stud nut. Very pricey. Brass nuts were pricey too.

I don't know of any reason why brass nuts could not be used in an automotive application.
