Subject:      Swapping an '81 4spd into a '90 WBX auto?

I perused the archives on the Vanagon page, but I couldn't find any
definitive answers from someone who's attempted this. I have a '90 with a
2.1 and a bad auto trans, and an '81 with a good 4spd trans. I know the
ratios are different from aircooled to watercooled, but can this trans still
be used? Can I just transfer the trans and linkage from the '81 directly to
the '90? And help/insight would be much appreciated. Thanks-
