William,

My understanding is that a firewall will prevent a hacker from gaining access to your computer through the internet connection. Many of today's routers have built in firewalls, but not all routers; check with the manufacture.

The emails that I've been getting that come through the newsgroup have almost all been of the Klez variety. It is a nasty worm and in most cases requires a reformatting of the hard drive. I know because it happened to me. If you are not running a virus protection program I'd suggest you get one immediately. Owning a virus protection program won't do you any good if you do not update it on a weekly basis. As much as I hate giving control over to a software program to automatically update itself this is one case where I'd recommend it.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

Richard

I've heard that using a router will work as it has a firewall. I've never been sure if this is really good protection. People who know say it is, but if you have only one computer why use a router? These days though many people have more than one computer.

William
