Same thing happened to mine. I did replace the resistor and it restored some, but not all, of the functionality. I have pics of the crispy critter, and a photo showing the differences between the early "B" and "D" units as well. I'll post them if anyone is interested.

Obviously this was a known problem as they changed the design of the unit in later years.
