The odometer on my Scirocco went slower .. and slower .. and slower .. until it no longer moved at all. The way those cogs are put together on the shafts is kinda dumb; it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the one driving one or the other started slipping. When I took mine out (speedo failed about the same time) I could spin the cogs freely back and forth... knocked a few hundred miles off the clock before throwing it away. :)

Also, my requisite comment about resetting the trip: a friend of mine bought an '86 Audi and lo, the PO said "Yeah, the odometer worked until I reset the trip on the freeway last fall.." Myself, I just take the advice for what it's worth and only reset it when stopped. I haven't priced Vanagon speedos, but it was $180 to replace the Scirocco's.

The speedometer/odometer in my Vanagon have never worked. Repairing the speedometer output on the front differential seems to be a mystery of the ages, an ancient, cursed Indian secret..
