Nope. I've got a California vehicle so I know exactly what these filters
look like. Very different from the Federal.
The filter I got at the junkyard was attached to a TypeIV motor out of an
older bus, not Vanagon, but the number written on it was the same number as
the one called for on Federal Vanagons. Someone had put a very funky
replacement on the "donor" engine for the port off the crossover pipe, but
the crossover pipe itself looked just like the crossover pipe for a Federal
air-cooled Vanagon. Perhaps it is the wrong filter for an air-cooled
Federal Vanagon, but it's very definitely not a California filter.
It's not something I can "correct" in place. No amount of loosening of
flanges, attachments, etc. will get the flange on the filter lined up close
enough to the flange on the crossover pipe so I can "muscle" it into place.
Plus, I'm pretty sure any attempts to force it into place in situ will
result in torn tin.
What I'd really like, if any body knows, are some thoughts on how to correct
the majority of the discrepancy off the engine so I can get things "close
enough" so I can do the final "fine tuning" on the engine. I'm thinking
that I should get myself a couple of pieces of fairly strong iron bar. One
bar, drilled so I can attach the top flange to it, would go in the bench
vise. The other bar, longer and drilled to match the lower flange, would be
my leverage bar. I think this set up would work fairly well to correct the
"cock" in the flange, but not as well to correct the fact that the lower
tube is effectively too long right now as I need to move the lower filter
flange toward the front of the engine a couple of inches.
