Subject: Suggestions on an '83 Camper
Content-Type: text/html

<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV>Hello everyone!</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>It's been some time since i've been on this list...I just joined again as about a week ago I&nbsp;became the third owner of an '83&nbsp;water-cooled Vanagon GL Country Homes Camper conversion.&nbsp; It is a really sweet machine, with an interior that is gorgeous, but like most 20yo vdubs, it is not w/out its issues.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>The engine is original with "105k" on it.&nbsp; This is in quotes because the PO, who I believe is very trustworthy, said the odometer crapped out in 1998.&nbsp; It is stuck at 61338.&nbsp; He also gave me records&nbsp;from the original owner that he had to replace the odometer at 14k as well.&nbsp; So the 2nd one worked for about 12 years, but is currently dead.&nbsp; Neither the trip odometer or the regular odometer function. </DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>In addition to this, the spedometer only functions about 80% of the time, and makes a rattle-type sound between 50-60mph.&nbsp; The analog clock also is funky, and works only about 30% of the time. </DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>I'm wondering:</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>-could all these things be related to each other?</DIV> <DIV>-how hard is it to disassemble the dash and replace or repair the odometer(s)?</DIV> <DIV>-Is there a fix for the clock, or should I get a new one?</DIV> <DIV>-same w/the spedometer...anything i can do to help it?</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>I was excited to see all the posts about tires, as i need a new pair as well.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Any other CHC owners out there? there doesn't seem to be alot of info on the net about them except for the CHC home page.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>Thanks to all! and esp. anyone who can help with my questions.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>If anyone wants to see a pic or two, let me know.</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>take care,</DIV> <DIV>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV>-James in Berkeley,CA (transplanted from MA :)</DIV></div><br clear=all><hr>MSN 8 helps <a href="http://g.msn.com/8HMRENUS/2743">ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES. </a> Get 2 months FREE*.</html>
