Don't know if anyone is interested, but the cause of this was a short at a wire connecting to the altinater. The wire still looked connected because it was held on by the factory molded boot. It was actually just sitting in the boot no making contact. This powers the fuel pump and the hal sensor. This brings power to the fuel pump relay, so even if the relay trips there is nothing to trip thanks to any one who responded Greg This was on an 87 vanagon
