Greetings,

I am new to the list, sort of. I joined this list in May of 1994 when it was new and the only VW transporter list on the internet. At that time, I owned a 1973 Westfalia and 1966 standard microbus (with a weekender conversion, sort of). When the lists split sometime around July 1996, I left for type2/vintagebus.

I still own the 1966 microbus and it is now mostly restored, the new bumpers I have for it still need to be painted and installed. I also have a 1959 panel van with a 36hp engine that I enjoy driving.

However, I recently bought a 1984 vanagon westfalia wolfsburg from another list member who lives here in Tucson so, now, I have a good reason to re-subscribe to the vanagon list!

The 1.9 liter waterboxer in this vehicle was blowing smoke and leaking coolant into the oil so I pulled the engine and tore it down far enough to discover that the main reason for the smoke/leakage is that the lower-rear cylinder head stud for the #1 cylinder broke about 1/3 of the way down the stud (!). Having rebuilt a couple air cooled VW engines in the past, I am surprised at the similarities between those engines and this one.

The first question I have for the list is: Where can I buy cylinder head studs for the 1.9 wbx engine?

Thanks,

-Dyer Lytle in Tucson
