JJ,

Did you ever consider rebuilding the thing yourself?? It's my understanding that the rebuilding of the autotranny in the vans is imminently doable in the home garage. Not so the the manual tranny, however. You may be going from good to bad if you switch to a manual tranny. And such a swap is a PITA. Historically, the auto tranny in the Vanagons is much tougher than the manuals, which have inherent parts failure problems.
