Marc,

With a crack or loose fitting in the intake boot your engine will be gulping
unmetered air.  The idle will be somewhat rough and the engine will stumble
or bogg down when accelerating from a stop.  You will also lose some low end
power.

A long time ago I saw some references on the list to sealing cracks in the
boot with Shoe Goo.

Ken Wilford ran a special on new boots not too long ago.  I was real
surprised to discover what bad shape mine was in when compared to the new
one.  The old one was hard as a rock and the vacuum attachments came out
very easily.
