Subject: Re: Automatic to manual conversion...

I have two Vanagons. One automatic, one 4 speed.

Since I first started driving in the 50s, I've been a strong advocate of manual transmissions .... that is until I got my Vanagon automatic.

As to the ones I now have ...... I'll leave 'em as is, but, if hard pressed, I'd admit that there are times I when I wish my 4 speed were automatic.

The automatic performs well, with only 1 or 2 mpg difference from the 4 speed (hard to tell the difference, really). It does well on hills (gotta love that kickdown switch) unless the hill is really long and steep .... then it can be manually dropped into a lower gear where it does fine (for a Vanagon). Actually, I find that I prefer the automatic over the 4 speed on long drives in hilly country, and I certainly prefer it when in stop and go traffic.

Now don't get me wrong .... I like my 4 speed, too. It can be push started, and is more predictable in snow and mud but I wouldn't consider changing the automatic one to manual.

Just had to put in my 2¢ worth.

Mike
