How about properly adjusting the cable so the valve can close properly from inside? It can be adjusted at the levers.

I have larger wheels now and took the spare tire storage pan off today in prep for a mod coming from Volks Cafe. While "in there" I reached up and closed the heater valve the rest of the way. This maneuvre completely cuts off hot coolant and I tested the interior for a half hour cruising the local hills. It's only about 60 here (Salt Lake) so it was easy to feel cool fresh air coming in the vents at my feet and the side-dash vents. It works and only takes a few minutes.

Thanks much to, I think, Debra and Mike for the tips on closing this.
