The most basic check is to make sure the radiator fan is working. If it is staying cold on the highway, that indicates a defective or missing thermostat. Get this fixed pronto. Not warming up and regular temperature swings are surefire methods to ruin the engine.

Can anyone offer advice on the cause of overheating during idling? My 87 Syncro runs very cold on the highway, but overheated today during a smog check, and I've noticed that the temperature guage starts to rise at long stop lights as well. Thanks!
