Subject: 84GL with 175,900 miles - restoration
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I am original and current owner of 3 spd stick shift 1.9L 84GL with 175,900 miles. I'm thinking it might be a good time for restoration before it craps out on the road. Here are some of the current ills:

1. Slight hesitation on acceleration (when it gets bad I usually throw a bottle of DuraLube fuel system cleaner into the tank. This takes care of the problem for awhile)

2. Occasionally the starter engages but won't crank engine, however it always starts on second try. Keep fingers crossed.

3. Engine drops oil and coolant disappears. Not a whole lot but noticeable.

4. Transmission makes clank-ity-clank sound when moving and clutch fully depressed.

5. Fuel system leaks at tank when filled up max.

6. Body has rust and dings all around.

7. Right front suspension goes creeeek-clunk-ity-clunk when wheel encounter a severe bump at slow speeds.

I have searched the list archives and find several engines/transmission alternatives are available, . I'm thinking rebuilt engine/transmission. Stay with Wasserboxer or some other, like Suburu ? I definitely would like to change to auto shift.

I'm curious as to what you experienced VW mechanics would recommend to get twenty more good years out of her.

Thanks for your response.
