Richard, I am assuming it runs good after it is warmed up? You need to provide more information. But if this is the case I would check the plugs before you start the vehicle. Perhaps you have a leaky injector that leaks after you shut the van off? gary

I've noticed a rash of cold start problems on wasserboxers lately on this list. My 87 has had the same problem for a while. So I replaced the temp sensor near the thermostat...replaced the thermostat....unplugged the oxy sensor (no change).....plugged back the oxy sensor (no change)....

So last week when the wisdom of the list said "replace the idle stabilizer valve" I decided to try that. I "borrowed" the stabilizer from my wife's 90 cabriolet. Put it in the 87 (I put the 87's old stabilizer in her cabriolet. Her cabriolet runs fine...the 87 still has the problem with bad idle when the engine is cold.

Obviously the 87 is running rich at cold start...I can see the black smoke...I can smell the excess hydrocarbons....and the engine runs rough off idle until the plugs burn clean...

So what do I do next???? AAAARRRRRGGGGG!!!
