If it smells like gas, its probably gas coming out the tail pipe that didn't get burned. Either the fuel mixture is so far from correct that it can't burn, the engine can't breathe, or there is an ignition problem. Check to see that there is spark at the plugs, if so, check the ignition timing (or, at least make sure the distributor hold down bolt is tight)

A clogged air filter or plugged cat (does it have a cat?) will cause breathing problems.

-------------------------------------------------- Well either you've got no spark, no gas, or no compression. Which one is it? I'm thinking if it smells like gas it's probably this.

Try clicking in some gas by hand via the engine bay. Perhaps the filter got clogged? Perhaps the pump broke down? What else could it be? Have you taken a close look? Is anything leaking gas?
