If it feels and sounds like the contents are one solid charcoal briquette, then you would want to probably replace the thing (Or drill it, empty it and refill it with activated charcoal). But if it still seems to have a granulated charcoal filling, see if you can vacuum air through it with a hand pump. Who diagnosed that you have a bad canister? Get another one from a wrecking yard ............... nobody ever removed them from any Vanagon I've ever seen in a wrecking yard. More than likely the canister fits many VW applications .............. check out other VW potentials.
