Another thing to remember, is that the Vanagon keys and Vanagon lock cylinders undergo a strange metamorphosis over the decades.

Seems that the tumblers wear just enough, and the keys wear just enough, so that your Vanagon key from any 80's Vanagon, has a very high probability of fitting into any other Vanagon... just try it in a few. And I am not talking just fitting in... It will open the lock with a bit of jiggling.

My key opened a 1984 Fire Truck Transporter which was sitting out for sale... I simply opened it up, looked around, checked the engine (a diesel, yuk) and closed it.

It opened my best friend's 86 Syncro too... which was rather convenient when we went on road trips and he misplaced his keys or locked them in.

Most recently, I found that my key fits a 1990 Syncro which belongs to a friend at work... He was not so excited to see this... but I promised him that I wouldn't sneak around in his bus.

Now if my key fits all these vanagons... their keys probably all fit mine too!

Good thing that all Vanagon owners are so honest, and would never do anything immoral or crazy to a fellow Vanagon owners vehicle...

Just imagine if Chevy Blazer keys could open up Vanagons.

IMPORTANT!!! In order to reply to me, you must have the word "FISH" somewhere in the subject line of the email. Otherwise it goes directly in the trash.
