Well a good way to check the system in an effort to eliminate the
distributor is to have a known good dizzy from another VW plugged in the
wiring loom and the key in the on position. Then simply spin the drive on
the dizzy and watch for spark (do not have coil wire in mouth or near
appendages while doing this test). If you do not have a known good dizzy
then you will have to consult the Bentley manual for the test procedure.
More than likely your computer has failed. but be sure to check for supply
voltage to the ECU and ground connections.

AFA a new coil wire; you might try calling a local shop and see if they have
one lying around. Many shops will save these from sets that come with more
than one coil wire. Although, I dont suspect that is your problem.
