Just as important as the tools, is the experience. In particular, all the housings must be inspected and checked for proper fit of the bearings. As a newbie to the trans world, consider the possibility of doing it a 2nd time at the same or greater cost of the 1st time. You will also need access to a press and some measuring tools.

My '91 Carat locked in 4th gear the other day but I carefully made it home. Last eve I bit the bullet and dropped out the transmission....quite easy as trannies go, took me about 1 1/2 hours. Van on axle-stands on the driveway...what a sad sight. I would like to be able to work on the tranny myself so I have been studying Bentleys. It doesnt look too bad...IF you have 1 or 2 essential tools. Reading Toms article confirms this too. Where can I get the VW 381/14 and 381/15 tools from ? Does anybody have them I could rent or borrow ? Tom's article says BugPak but I havent located them yet. Can anybody help? Am I crazy for wanting to try ? Should I swap the whole thing for Auto ? The wife would like that. cheers, Steve Cotsford Columbia SC
