Hi Steve,

I have owned several 2.1L WBRs and presently have a '90 & '91 that run flawlessly. The Digifant management is not known for the concern you describe. The problem seems to be a lean mixture during the transition from idle to cruise. Swapping parts is not 100% reliable since there is no guarantee that the Digifant Control Module(DCM) is getting the correct input value(s).

Pull the black plastic cover from the DCM 25 pin connector and check (back probe) the AFM voltage signal at pin 21 when the the problem occurs. As the throttle opens, the AFM voltage signal should increase proportionately from <1V to <5V. Using a scope in place of a voltmeter would be even more reliable.

During acceleration, the air volume entering the engine increases dramatically and must be matched with additional fuel. This important compensation occurs primarily from the AFM signal so the quality of the AFM signal must be verified at the DCM input pin.

Regards, John
