Brian, Two white wires are for the heater. Polarity not important as you suspected. Black wire is the signal. Shielded wire is the green wire from the ECU. Must be shielded right up to the terminal end but not contacting the terminal end. Black wire from the oxy sensor is not shielded. If your installing a BOSCH generic oxy sensor and splicing in your old connector as I suspect your doing make sure the connections are either well soldered or use a good nude crimp connector. The joint needs to be covered with heat shrink tubing so that it is moisture proof. The joints should also be stagered.
