I'll concur on the low likelihood of finding any westy worth driving for $1500. No-one sells anything that cheap unless it needs work. I do, however, have another idea which I haven't seen mentioned:

Buy a standard van with your $1500 with a rear seat/bed in it and drive THAT across. If you have just basic skills a full westy interior could be inserted from wrecked yard. No pop (unless you graft that on), but you'll have something you can sleep in and drive. OK, all that said, you're still not going to find any trouble-free 7 passenger vans for $1500 without looking long and hard.

Oh, the other suggestion might be to move back in time a bit and find a rusted out bay window westy for your $$. $1500 could get you something with a trashed body but good mechanicals on the east coast...
