It probably has more to do with the air-conditioning
intake location at the back of the vehicle. I would
guess if the rear door isn't completely closed the A/C
blower could possibly suck in exhaust gasses and blow
them into the cabin area.

I use some foam rubber blocks in the defroster ducts
and behind the lower heater vent cover to block off
all of the outside air. They remove easily for driving
during the cooler months.

Good luck and make sure your rear door is closed
completely.
