I suggest you go to kelly blue book (www.kbb.com) and see what numbers they come up with for your vanagon. It is a starting point. Here in the MW these are rarer (as you observed) and rustier than what you usually find out west. Being oddball, not too many people are adventurous enough to take the chance.

Unless it is wrecked or the engine is seized, that would not be the way to go.
