I have noticed that among customers who order one but not the other, I get a high percentage who end up ordering the other one shortly thereafter. Also, the local VW specialist to whom I send my own van and refer my customers (and who has forgotten more about Vanagons than I'll ever know) always replaces them in pairs because he has noticed the same trend after doing the job hundreds of times. So I always replace both at once on my Vanagons. If it were a $200 or $300 part maybe I'd chance it. But for $50 more I'd rather just do it once and be done with it. Just my $.02.
